This heuristic discourse examines tattooing beyond process and decoration, and alongside religion, mysticism, sacred symbolism, spiritual practice, anthropology, psychotherapy, history, and culture. It includes a rich collection of works by these tattooers, and essays by the editor discussing the indwelling power in symbol, and concepts of permanence, impermanence, and contingency in tattoo.
